Gardener's Calendar in April

Trees and shrubs:
    Remove dead flower heads. Water recently planted trees and shrubs. Mulch where possible. Trim shrubs if required.

Hardy border flowers:
   Remove dead flowers regularly; keep weeds down; water generously in dry spells, mulch and feed. Fill gaps with bedding plants.

Roses:
   Watch for signs of mildrew and black spot or rust diseases and spray at the first sign of trouble. Remove suckers. Tie new growths of climbing and rambler roses. Remove dead heads.

Gardener's Calendar in March

Lawns:
Apply selective weedkillers. Apply acid fertilizer if clover is present.

Trees and shrubs:
Prune or trim shrubs as necessary. Plant bamboos.

Flowers from seeds:
Sow hardy and half hardy annuals; sow biennials. plant half hardy and tender annuals late in the month.

Hardy border flowers:
Continue staking; thin shoots where required; lift and replant polyanthus.

Bulbs:
Mulch lilies and spray against botrytis disease. Lift and heel in biulbs wich have been used in spring bedding. Plant crinums.

Palm trees:
Apply treatment against the Red Palm Weevil.

Gardener's Calendar in February

Lawns:
True up or trim lawn edges. Fill hollows and level humps. Control worms. Repair bare patches. Apply fertilizer.

Trees and shrubs:
Prune forsythias. Plant evergreens. Clip ivy on walls.

Roses:
Underplant roses with attractive carpeting plants. Apply a residual weedkiller to rose beds and kill perennial weeds. Spray against pests and diseases; apply a mulch.

Hardly border flowers:
Stake plants before they grow too tall. Deadhead daffodils. Plant summer flowering bulbs.

Flowers from seeds:
Keep on sowing hardy annuals in the open when the soil is workable. Sow half hardy annuals in a frame, under cloches or in a cold greenhouse. Sow flowers for cutting; also ornamental grasses. Weed and thin seedlings.

Fruit:
Finish planting strawberries. Prune soft fruit. Mulch fruit trees and bushes. Spray gooseberries.
